Open Vented Mixer Taps

A open vented mixer tap (often called an open-vented mixer) is specially designed to work with under-sink unpressurized or open-vented hot water cylinders (commonly found in Europe and older or specific Australian setups). Unlike standard taps, they allow expanding water to drip safely from the spout rather than building up dangerous pressure that could burst the hot water tank.

Here is how they work in detail:Non-Pressurized Design: The water heater is directly connected to the atmosphere via an open vent pipe, meaning the water inside isn't under mains pressure. The Mixing Process: When you use a vented mixer tap to get warm water, the tap regulates the cold water flow while the hot water pathway remains unrestricted. Cold water enters the boiler, displacing the hot water and forcing it out of the spout.Pressure Relief: Because water expands when heated, the unrestricted path lets the expanded hot water safely "drip" out of the tap. This drop-for-drop overflow prevents the build-up of dangerous pressure inside the unvented hot water tank.If you were to install a conventional, standard tap (which entirely shuts off the water flow) on an open-vented system, the trapped pressure could burst the water heater.
